SOS Malabar Pitviper

The Malabar pit viper is a species endemic to India, and this stunning viper can be found in a variety of colors in its natural habitat. However, very little is known about this animal, particularly regarding its population size. To investigate this properly and to better understand its ecological needs, radiotelemetric research has been chosen as the method. This will help develop future strategies for the conservation of the species.

Additionally, the venom of this species has barely been studied and could be of great scientific value. The research is being conducted by the Kalinga Centre for Rainforest Ecology. The Herpetofauna Foundation has contributed to the funding of the trackers with which the snakes will be equipped. This is very similar to research we have previously funded for the king cobra and the Russell's viper.
