The foundation aims to raise capital to support projects that promote animal welfare. The focus is on reptiles, amphibians, and arthropods, as well as their natural habitats and related species that are essential for the survival of these animal groups.
The Herpetofauna Foundation is built on four pillars: conservation, education, research, and collaboration. These pillars define our policy and guide the direction we take as an organization.
Education is a crucial pillar of conservation and essential for the preservation of these animals and their habitats. Reptiles and amphibians are often misunderstood and evoke fear or aversion in many people. To break these misconceptions, we provide advice and educational programs to schools, governments, and individuals. Our goal is to increase knowledge, understanding, and respect for these species. Additionally, we develop materials tailored to different age groups and audiences, allowing us to spread our message widely.
Through research, we contribute to both conservation and medical advancement. There is still much to learn about the behavior, anatomy, and physiology of reptiles and amphibians. This knowledge is essential for better protecting these species in the wild and improving breeding and conservation programs in captivity. A key focus of our foundation is toxin research. Many species are venomous, and their toxins can provide valuable insights, not only for better treatment of bites but also for the development of medicines for various diseases and conditions.
The Herpetofauna Foundation is dedicated to the global conservation of reptiles, amphibians, and their habitats. Many of these species are critically endangered and risk extinction without intervention. We work closely with herpetologists and conservation biologists, raising funds to support their efforts. In addition, we provide essential materials and logistical assistance to these projects. Through targeted actions, we contribute to the protection of these vulnerable species and their ecosystems.
As a foundation, we proudly play the role of the hub in a larger network. Our extensive network includes scientists, zoos, medical professionals, hobbyists, government officials, and NGOs. By bringing these parties together, we foster collaboration and enable better policy decisions to ensure the welfare and protection of reptiles and amphibians. Our home base, the Netherlands, provides an ideal location for conferences and symposia, thanks to its favorable infrastructure. This makes it even easier to connect people and ideas, all working toward a shared goal: the conservation of these remarkable species.
