Roatan Spiny-tailed Iguana

The Roatan spiny tailed iguana (Ctenosaura oedirhina) is currently rapidly declining in numbers. The loss of natural habitat on the Honduran island of Roatan is a major problem, but poaching is also a point of attention. This is mainly because the species are frequently eaten and therefore preserving the species is also an economic problem given the high degree of poverty in the distribution area.

Much of the natural habitat has also suffered from human activity and deforestation for mining, farming and road construction. Climate change has also been added, which affects the reproduction rate of the species.

Donations have since been used to protect the Roatan spiny-tailed iguana. Given the extreme threat of this species, the Herpetofauna Foundation has chosen to support this species in the first instance. Projects on other Ctenosaura species will also be supported by us in the near future.
