Rainforests of Bahia

The Brazilian rainforest has been an endangered ecosystem for many years. Due to the enormous forest clearing, pollution, but also poaching, more and more animal and plant species are finding it difficult to survive and reproduce in this limited space.

The rainforest of the Bahia region is home to over 150 different species of reptiles and amphibians, all facing an uncertain future. In order to get a clear picture of which animals need protection the most, research is being done into the available living space, behavior and food requirements.

The project is coordinated from the University of Kent (GB) and is supported by several organizations, including the Herpetofauna Foundation. What is special about this project is that it was an initiative of Moacir Tinoco. Thanks to his research he was able to bring the area to the attention of the IUCN and ultimately he had it declared protected. This is a clear example of the strength of an individual when it comes to conservation.
