Stefan Lötters developed a passion for amphibians early in school. He became a poison frog keeper and before finishing school a ‘junior researcher’ aiming to pursue amphibians as a career. Soon then harlequin toads (Atelopus) became a focal group and Lötters has studied them with passion, meantime being a professor at Trier University, for 35 years now. Unfortunately, these amphibians are among the most threatened vertebrates on Earth, so that much of Lötters’ scientific engagement is dedicated to conservation efforts.
